Oak Ridge National Labs Technical Tour

As promised, this year, we will have multiple opportunities to learn and network outside of our monthly meetings. I briefly mentioned at our September meeting that I have been working with a team at Oak Ridge National Labs (ORNL) to get us a technical tour setup and I happy to now share the details with you all. NOTE: a background check is required to participate in the tour and the deadline to submit your information to ORNL is Friday October 18

The tour will start promptly at 10 am est. There will be a break for lunch. There is a cafeteria onsite when lunch can be purchased. I am told the average cost is $8-10 or you are welcome to bring your own lunch. There is no cost for the tour and we will be issuing 1 PDH credit for those in attendance.

Sites seen will include the Supercomputers and BRTIC labs.

Computational Facilities / Frontier and Summit Data Centers:

During this tour, attendees will get to see Frontier, the world’s fastest supercomputer since June 2022 and Summit the world’s fastest supercomputer from June 2018 to November 2019 and is currently at #9. Details about the two data centers’ mechanical support systems will be given with an in-depth look at the cooling systems.  The central energy plants serving these systems provide nominally 20MW for Summit and 40MW for Frontier.  The annualized power usage effectiveness (PUE) for Summit’s data center has been around 1.11 while Frontier’s has been1.06.

BRTIC:

The Building Technologies Research and Integration Center (BTRIC) is the only US Department of Energy (DOE)-designated National User Facility devoted to building technologies research and development. The 60,000ft2 campus includes the flagship MAXLAB, a multipurpose laboratory to advance the energy efficiency and durability of building envelopes, equipment, and materials.
